Vineyards : Grower Owned

BVE is very fortunate to have had access to a wide variety of fruit grown in a wide selection of microenvironments and soil types throughout the BarossaValley.

Grower Vineyards

Our growers are at the very foundation of Barossa Valley Estate (BVE).   In 1984, the consumption of red wine was declining. Offering handsome subsidies, the federal government urged growers to pull out their ancient Shiraz vines and replace them with Chardonnay.

But eighty 3rd and 4th generation Barossa Valley grape growers refused and stubbornness became their strength. Instead of trying to sell the grapes to winemakers for little reward, they decided to take control of their own destiny by forming a cooperative and produce their own wine.    It is these growers who have continually supplied the fruit for the range of BVE wines.

Today these 3rd and 4th generations of growers supply grapes from 177ha (437 acres) stretching from one end of the Barossa to the other.   While Shiraz is our specialty we also source the major varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and Semillon.

Critical to achieving the highest quality every year our growers work closely with our viticulturist and winemaker to achieve wines that over deliver to our customers worldwide.    There is no doubt wine is made in the vineyard and the role of winemakers is to preserve the quality and characters of each individual patch.

To achieve this the BVE team and grower work closely together to produce the highest quality fruit for their particular patch, advising where necessary on pruning, weed control, crop management, crop protection, canopy management and most importantly scheduling of fruit into the winery when grapes are at their optimum maturity.

This relationship between winemaker, viticulturist and grower is a cornerstone of the history and future of BVE and is reflected in the quality of wines we produce.
